GDC Tech Demo Recap; Unreal 4 & FOX

Unreal Engine 4 'Elemental' Tech Demo Running on PlayStation 4 Extended Version

This tech demo, titled "Elemental," spotlights an armoured boss-type character sitting like a dormant volcano in an abandoned-looking hall. He is suddenly awakened by a gust of wind and snow flying into his sanctum, and proceeds to call forth lava to awaken magical mechanisms and free him from his frozen throne.

"Elemental" was originally revealed last June; this version is declared to be running in real time on the PS4.

Unreal Engine 4 'Infiltrator' Tech Demo Running on a single GTX 680

Epic debuted its new "Infiltrator" tech demo to partners, press, and prospective customers behind closed doors at GDC 13 earlier today. Epic vice president Mark Rein introduced Infiltrator as an entirely real-time demonstration of Unreal Engine 4's capabilities.

Fox Engine Tech Demo

Kojima Productions lifted the veil on the FOX engine when Hideo took to the stage at GDC for his presentation where he revealed Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. FOX Engine matches up to real world environments and settings, revealing a process wherein a complex scan renders the image or person in excruciatingly realistic detail.

Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 3 won’t be supported on Wii U

by Greg Woolston

Epic games co founder, Mark Rein, spoke quite candidly at GDC about the Wii U and Unreal Engine 4. When asked if Unreal Engine 4 would work on Wii U, Rein is quoted by IGN as laughingly saying: “No.”

Why Do People Love Bioshock?

by Dexter Jaekel

So I have a confession to make.... I never finished Bioshock. Please don't throw your stones at me, I have a legitimate excuse, sort of. Whenever someone gets sick right after eating a particular food, most of the time they don't like the idea of eating that food again because they attribute it to being sick (even if it was something else that made them sick).

Mentally-Operated Electronic Cat Ears Move With Your Thoughts

Keeping an ear to the ground on the latest consumer electronics, we occasionally encounter the most ridiculous items we never thought we'd need. This year's Game Developer's Conference in San Fransisco featured something absurd, unnecessary, and yet... something that we'd all like to own.

The Necomimi is a pair of mechanical cat ears that operate with a brainwave sensor developed by NeuroSky, detecting your different moods and moving the feline ears accordingly. Excitement will cause the ears to wiggle, relaxation or boredom will make the ears droop, and showing interest will lift one ear intently. NeuroSky uses an algorithm to decipher the electronic impulses from your brain, translating them into moods that control the ears. The brainwave sensor has been proven to be effective in mind-controlled gadgets that have trickled into the consumer tech market for the past couple years.

The set of ears can be bought on the company's website, www.necomimi.com, along with Tailly, which is a heart rate-controlled tail that came out last year on Kickstarter.

You're Next Finally Releases a Trailer

I have waited almost two years to see this movie. Finally the first trailer for You're Next is now online.
This film completely devastated the audience at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and was almost immediately pulled down and hidden behind closed doors. Eleven days later Lionsgate bought the rights to the film and has cherished this movie ever since.

It's Official: Battlefield 4 Launching Fall 2013

It's Official; Battlefield 4 is releasing Fall 2013. We posted screenshots yesterday as well as the news that the new Frostbite 3 engine will be powering the war game. Chances are that Battlefield 4 will be a launch/release title for next-gen consoles is high seeing as no specific release date is declared, but to curb your gaming appetite we have two new screenshots to add to the gallery, a tv spot, and a look at 17 minutes of gameplay. Enjoy. Pre-Order Now!

Battlefield 4 will NOT be released on the Wii U.

Official Press Release:
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Only in Battlefield™ can players go through a building instead of around it or eject from a jet and take out the enemy mid-free fall. Those incredible gameplay moments that blur the line between game and glory can only be created by players, and occur only in Battlefield. DICE, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA), today announced Battlefield 4™, a genre-defining action blockbuster launching in Fall 2013. Powered by the advanced technology of DICE's proprietary Frostbite™ 3 engine, Battlefield 4 offers players a glimpse into the future of interactive entertainment — a future that is more human, dramatic and believable than anything before it. With more than 65 million players worldwide, the Battlefield series has consistently been praised by critics for its world-class multiplayer gameplay, and is recognized as the only game that allows players to own land, sea and air.
Battlefield 4 is a seminal moment for the Battlefield series as more award-winning, multiplayer game design elements are incorporated into the single-player campaign. In single-player, gamers will experience huge environments, a playground of destruction, access to an arsenal of vehicles and the ability to direct squad mates. Taking a page from the social aspect of multiplayer gaming, the single-player mode will now track players' progress, adding an element of persistence and friendly competition to the campaign.
The game made its world debut today with a staggering 17-minute gameplay demo, available for view at Battlefield.com. The demo begins as the player — Recker — opens his eyes to discover that he is trapped in a rapidly sinking car with three of his squad mates. Shooting the window is the only way out. Panic and fear are pushed aside as Recker makes a difficult decision — take the shot and recover the intel but risk that not everyone will survive. The emotional demo features a cast of characters unrivaled in interactive entertainment. Players will learn how to work together in both the Campaign and Multiplayer, issuing squad orders and comparing achievements in both experiences. Adventure and Competition will unfold through a series of beautifully crafted locations constructed with some of the best art and sound design in modern shooters. All of this is only possible with Frostbite 3 — a new standard for interactive entertainment in 2013.
"We are so humbled and proud to debut Battlefield 4 on a global stage with simultaneous events in San Francisco and Stockholm. To be this early in development, and to already be so polished is a huge achievement for the DICE team and reflection of their passion and commitment to driving the franchise forward. Today's demo was just the beginning -- we have so much more in store," said Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President, EA Games Label. "It is thrilling to witness peoples' reaction when seeing the game for the first time. It really makes you realize that we are at the beginning of a whole new era for gaming. As artists and craftspeople, we are focused on creating a dynamic, open design that brings people together with amazing, surprising unscripted moments that they'll talk about for days. That's the beauty of Battlefield."
By pre-ordering Battlefield 4 at any participating retail outlet, gamers will receive a Premium expansion pack at no additional cost*. DICE also announced today Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe, an Origin™ exclusive special edition that includes the base game and bonus in-game digital items. Players that pre-order Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe* on Origin will also receive the Premium expansion pack as well as access to the exclusive Battlefield 4 multiplayer beta.

Guacamelee! is coming soon to PS3 and PSVita

by Greg Woolston

Guacamelee! is a game that I have been very excited about ever since I heard that it was in production. Drinkbox Studios is known for their Tales from Space series. I played Mutant Blobs Attack extensively, and it is one of my favorite games on the Vita.

Battlefield 4 is Running on Frostbite 3; Teaser & Screenshots

Battlefield 4 is currently being revealed behind closed doors in Stockholm to the Swedish press and gamers. And the first details about the game have emerged.

[Here's a Sneak Preview of the Trailer]

Many suspected that Battlefield 4 would be powered by an updated Frostbite 2 engine — the same that powers BF3. Now it appears that Battlefield 4 is getting a brand new engine, Frostbite 3, filled with tons of new features built from the ground up.

Among the new additions is a much improved destruction feature where buildings can be completely destroyed (like in Bad Company 2, only at a much greater level and detail), a better lighting system, new animations, a brand new weather system, and more.

For now here are 3 BRAND NEW screenshots!

Square Enix President resigns

Not long after John Riccitiello announced his resignation from EA, Square Enix's President Yoichi Wada has announced that he will be leaving the company.
The company has announced that Yosuke Matsuda, who is the current representative director of the company, will replace him. The change is part of a company's ongoing management reform.
Square Enix recently announced that they were expecting an "extraordinary loss" in terms of the company's fiscal year. This is expected to be the reason for the change, due to very similar reasons being the catalyst for Ricitiello's resignation.
Recently, Square Enix has released Tomb Raider and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, though other notable titles include The World Ends With You, and the Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy franchise.

Skullcandy’s New Crusher Will Surely Knock Your Socks Off

by Greg Woolston

Source: www.skullcandy.com

When it comes to headphones these days there are a lot of options to choose from. It seems like the market is moving in a direction where there is less differentiation other than what logo is on the ear cup. Skullcandy is aiming to change all that with the new Crusher headphones.

The original Skullcrusher was Skullcandy’s claim to fame. When it was released, there was nothing else like it in the market. Along with the traditional audio drivers there were also vibrating “sub woofer” drivers in each ear cup. This allowed the listener to experience the bass, and actually feel it. With the new Crusher Skullcandy has stepped it up a notch. Taking that original Skullcrusher idea, and improving upon it for the second iteration gives us a headphone that will most likely rattle some skulls. From Skullcandy’s website, they give a little insight into how the Crusher came about

“Coming soon from Skullcandy is a headphone that will literally rattle your brain with bass. Think about when you're at a concert and can feel the music beat. Or when you can feel the two 12” subs sitting in the trunk of the car next to you at a stoplight. Our question was, why can't a headphone give you that same experience? The bass in most headphones is either suppressed and muddy or exaggerated and boomy. Our cans? Well, they attack with punchy & powerful bass that’s engineered for music or gaming – bass you can feel.”

There are only a few headphones that offer this kind of experience. Recently Skullcandy has been making improvements to their product, and quality department as part of their supreme sound initiative. Given these improvements it’s no doubt that these will be the cans to have when they are released sometime in April. With Skullcandy’s commitment to building very cool products, this is definitely one to look out for.

Console Wars: Pick Your Side or Not

Console Wars: Pick Your Side or Not

by Greg Woolston

Fanboy wars have raged for decades, and maybe even farther back before consoles or game systems even existed. This is something that anyone has to deal with that plays games on any console, but it goes beyond consoles to any sort of brand that we techies get behind. There are Playstation fans or Xbox fans; iOS fans or Android fans; Windows fans or Mac fans that seem to constantly debate which is better, and each fan will take their brand of choice to the grave. As a tech conscious consumer in today’s digital world, I have become less of a fanboy and more of a proponent for innovation.

The point that I am trying to make hits most closely to home with each new console generation, and with the new generation quickly approaching I wanted to get my thoughts out there to maybe open some minds about trying to avoid being an obsessed fanboy. My first experience with fanboyism came when I got my first console. As a child I had had some experience with the NES and the Genesis, but I wasn’t allowed to get video games until I was 9 years old. Almost 16 years ago my father asked me which console I wanted: a Nintendo 64 or Sony Playstation. I was unable to make a clear decision. We decided to rent both systems, and try the games from both systems. I instantly fell in love with Wave Race, and Star Fox on the 64. However, I also loved playing games like Crash Bandicoot, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the Playstation. In the end my father made the choice that he thought the Playstation would be better for me and that more of the games resonated with me. My best friend at the time gave me a lot of trouble for getting the Playstation, and I had no idea why. Why was it that because I got the Playstation I became the enemy? From that moment on, I stood up and defended the Playstation with everything I had. I had become part of Sony’s army at just 9 years old, and I had no idea why.

To this day I have played on Sony’s platforms, maybe it started because of that first fanboy experience that I had when I was 9. When I got a job as a teenager I was able to purchase other systems to try them out, but ultimately always reverted back to my Playstation. I really enjoyed Halo on the original Xbox, but nothing could compare to sneaking around as Snake or Raiden on the Playstation 2. I loved, and still love, the Playstation platform, and the Dualshock controller is my personal favorite gaming controller of all time. The games I wanted to play were on the Playstation. Even with my deep Sony roots I have recently come to the conclusion that the whole fanboy war is stupid, and completely useless. Who cares how you play games? As long as we are getting the immersive gaming experiences that we crave, who has the right to tell us that we are doing it wrong?

Companies try their best to satisfy customers with their products, and offer certain features to retain those customers. Let’s face the facts. All Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo really want is to make money. We can stand by our gaming ideals, and preach that company X or company Y is out there to deliver unique experiences for their customers no matter what happens on the business end of the company. But, all of these companies are run by CEOs that have board members, and maybe more importantly the stockholders that keep hounding them if the company isn't profitable. Why did Sony introduce the Move? Or, whose brilliant decision was it at Microsoft to release the Kinect? Each of these companies saw how much money Nintendo was raking in with the Wii, and  they both wanted a piece of that pie. I have never used a Move controller, but I have spent a lot of time with the Wii and some time with Kinect. As a gamer I have no interest in motion gaming, and I feel that I am not alone. But, these things will exist as long as the parent company can make money off of it.

Getting back on point, we give these companies our hard earned money to get a product that we can get countless hours of enjoyment out of. Purchasing a gaming console can be quite the hurdle for some, especially at launch before any kind of a price drop. Sometimes kids will have to save their lawn mowing money for months before being able to purchase a game. This is, in my opinion, where devotion to a brand begins. We invest in a piece of hardware, and we don’t want anyone to think that what we bought is dumb or inferior. Instead of defending the company that produced my game system, and berating those that didn’t buy from that company, wouldn’t it be better to have discussions about how gaming has improved over the years because different companies exist? What would have happened had Sony and Nintendo been able to work out their joint console? Would Microsoft be in the console race today, or would we have one console that may or may not be state of the art?

When different companies compete for the same customers, we are the ones that receive the most benefits. We get to enjoy the improvements of each console generation, because if one company doesn’t step it up, then the other will innovate in order to win more customers. The conversation going around should be about where this industry can go with competition rather than which company sucks, and which company should be worshiped. With the new console generation I hope to be able to purchase more than just the next Playstation to get a well-rounded view of what is good across all platforms. I’ll have to start saving now. Take my opinion for what it is worth, but in the end take an audit of how childish it sounds to defend a certain company the next time your inner fanboy emerges. Wouldn’t it be better to improve, and gain new friendships around games?

What do you think of the latest installment in the Bioshock franchise? Will you be picking it up day 1, or waiting to see if it's eligible for backwards compatibility?
